John W. Boys Smith, MD

As a board certified ophthalmologist and surgeon, Dr. Boys Smith's expertise enables him to diagnose and treat difficult cases and accurately diagnose any eye problems you may be experiencing. He is a fellowship trained glaucoma specialist with several years of university teaching and research experience in glaucoma.

Dr. Boys Smith was born in Cambridge, England. He received his B.A. degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge with emphasis in Zoology, Botany and Mathematics, later turning to medicine and receiving his M.A. and medical degrees from the same university. His internships included working for Mr. Ridley, inventor of the first intraocular lens implants, internal medicine, and working a year in Neurology and Neurosurgery at Cambridge. He attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for his residency training in Ophthalmology and also completed a full fellowship in glaucoma at Emory University, Atlanta. Dr. Boys Smith has invented several medical devices for ophthalmology and published in leading peer-reviewed journals. He worked at the University Eye Clinic in Munich, Germany where he received his recognition as Ophthalmologist, the equivalent in Germany of Board Certification in the United States.

Dr. Boys Smith also went to Cali, Colombia on a European Assistance Program and set up the first group practice in the south of the country. During his six years there he introduced American standards of ophthalmology in a private setting and taught at the University of Cali, Colombia, becoming fluent in Spanish. He has also been a professor of glaucoma at Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, and has served as head of the Department of Ophthalmology in Marshfield Clinic, Wisconsin. Dr. Boys Smith is on the board of directors of the American Association of Dispensing Ophthalmologists, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

As founder and director of Boys Smith Vision Center, Dr. Boys Smith is a leading force in pioneering comprehensive ophthalmology care in Central Washington. He is currently developing a model for optimizing ophthalmology eye health care in a rural setting by combining it with vision care through knowledgeable use of modern technology in lens making. His vision is for ophthalmologists to be able to apply this model in rural settings across the nation, enabling Eye MDs to have successful practices.

Dr. Boys Smith is dedicated to serving his patients with a passion for practicing the art of medicine with the utmost precision and taking advantage of the 21st century technology. He is a strong advocate of patient education. To that end, Dr. Boys Smith strives to build a long-lasting, team-effort relationship with his patients in order to properly care for their eyesight.
